Region is located in the north-western part of Uzbekistan among the desert spaces. The territory of the region is a lowland plain, which is an ancient delta of the Amudarya river. Khorezm oasis is the oldest center of artificial irrigation. The Amudarya is the only waterway, the waters of which are used for irrigation of gardens, cotton, rice, wheat, alfalfa, grape and melon plantations. On the territory of the region, the river has low shores, therefore during the flood period coastal zones are often flooded.
The sharply continental climate causes a little snow cold winter (-320С -350С) and dry hot summer (+ 450С).
In the lower reaches of the Amu Darya, the viloyat is the most densely populated area and the most northerly district in the world for growing cotton.
The economic activity of the region is oriented towards agro-industrial direction.
The basis of the agricultural sector is cotton growing, the yield indicator is the highest in the country (early maturing, medium-fibrous grades of cotton predominate). On the left bank of the Amu Darya in the X century on the territory of ancient Khorezm near the trade village was built a small fortress – Urgench. Gradually expanding, the city acquires the status of the capital, where goods were delivered to the Amu Darya and the Aral Sea and agricultural products were exported by the same trade routes. As a result of the wars of conquest and civil strife, the city was almost completely destroyed and became known as Kunya Urgench (Old Urgench – located on the territory of Turkmenistan), because in the XVII century, 200 km from Kunya Urgench, a new city was laid – Urgench . It is crossed by the largest irrigation structure of Khorezm – one of the largest irrigation canals of the region – Shavat.
